A little about Deb
Born and raised in Narrabri, NSW, Deb Michell-Smith is an emerging Australian artist celebrated for her vibrant acrylic paintings that capture the beauty and stories of regional landscapes and communities. She holds a Bachelor of Visual Arts from the University of Southern Queensland and lives on a farm in North West NSW, where her creative journey is deeply embedded.
In 2025, Deb continued to build national recognition for her work, being named a finalist in the Prospect Portrait Prize, PRO Hart Outback Art Prize, 9 x 5 Landscape Art Prize, John Villiers Outback Art Prize, The Interior Art Prize and The Doyles Art Award. She was also a finalist and awarded the People’s Choice Award at the BAM Moree Biennale Portrait Prize and highly-commended at Inverell Art Prize.
In 2024, Deb achieved significant recognition, becoming a finalist in the National Emerging Art Prize, the Interior Art Prize NSW, the Stanthorpe Art Prize QLD, the Fleurieu Biennale SA, the John Villiers Outback Art Prize QLD, and The Doyles Art Award QLD.
Deb had a mezzanine exhibition at Michael Reid Southern Highlands in June 2025 and has an upcoming solo exhibition in February 2026 at Weswal Gallery, Tamworth. Her paintings are represented in the stockroom of Satch & Co. Gallery Holbrook.
